Ever Wonder How Energy Healing Works?

Let's first understand what electric energy we have in our bodies - and how it all works.

Our bodies are constantly buzzing with energy - specifically through the nervous system. You might not feel it, but your brain and body are always communicating through tiny electrical pulses. Let's break down how that works in a simple way.

The Nervous System: The Body’s Communication Highway

Think of your nervous system as a super-efficient delivery service, sending and receiving messages throughout your body. These messages travel fast—like really fast! And they’re powered by electrical energy.

At the heart of this system are neurons—the cells that send these messages. Neurons act like little messengers, carrying electrical signals from one part of the body to another. These signals are known as action potentials (fancy word for the electrical signals that travel through neurons). Neurons talk to each other, to your muscles, and to your brain, making sure everything from moving your hand to feeling happy is in sync.

How Do Neurons Send Electrical Messages?

Neurons have different parts, but the most important ones are:
- Dendrites, which receive messages from other neurons.
- Axons, which send those messages along to the next neuron or the brain.

When a neuron is triggered (maybe because you touched something, smelled a flower, or even had a thought), it generates a tiny electrical pulse. This pulse travels down the neuron and hops over to the next one. Think of it like passing a note in class—each neuron passes the message to the next, all the way to its destination.

Your Senses: How We Experience the World

Everything you experience—sights, sounds, smells, touches—comes through your senses, which are powered by special cells called sensory receptors. Here’s how they work:
- Eyes have photoreceptors to detect light and send signals that let you see.
- Ears detect sound waves and send electrical signals to your brain to process them as sounds.
- Skin has receptors that feel touch, pressure, and temperature.

When your sensory receptors are activated (like when you touch something hot or hear music), they convert that sensation into an electrical signal. These signals then travel through your nerves and spinal cord, eventually reaching your brain.

The Brain: The Master Control Center

Once the brain gets these electrical signals from your senses, it processes them and figures out what’s happening. For example:
- If you touch something hot, your brain gets that electrical signal and tells you, “Ouch! Move your hand!”
- If you hear a song you love, your brain processes the sound and releases chemicals that make you feel happy.

The brain is like a supercomputer that runs on electrical energy. It’s constantly processing millions of electrical signals every second to keep you moving, thinking, and feeling.

Emotions and Thoughts: Electrical Energy in Action

Your emotions and thoughts are also connected to electrical activity in the brain. When you feel happy, sad, excited, or anxious, your brain’s neurons are firing electrical signals that release different neurotransmitters (brain chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and cortisol). These chemicals change how you feel:
- Dopamine: Makes you feel motivated and rewarded.
- Serotonin: Helps regulate mood and makes you feel calm.
- Cortisol: The stress hormone that kicks in when you feel anxious.

Even when you think or imagine something, your neurons are sending electrical signals through your brain, allowing you to have ideas, memories, and even dream.

Can Energy Get Blocked in Our Bodies?

Now that we know the body communicates through electrical signals, you might be wondering: Can these signals get blocked or disrupted? The short answer is yes, and when this happens, it can lead to issues with how your body or brain functions.

Here’s a few common ways these disruptions can happen:

  • Nerve Damage: Injuries or diseases like diabetes can damage nerves, slowing down or completely blocking the electrical signals. This often leads to numbness, weakness, or even chronic pain in certain areas of the body.
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS): In this condition, the protective covering around nerves (called myelin) is damaged, which makes it harder for electrical signals to travel, leading to symptoms like muscle weakness or problems with coordination.
  • Nutrient Deficiencies: Not getting enough essential vitamins, like B12, can affect how well your nerves function. This can cause things like fatigue, numbness, or memory problems.
  • Chronic Pain Conditions: In conditions like fibromyalgia, the nervous system might continue sending pain signals even when there’s no injury, causing the brain to interpret these signals as pain.

Now, while these physical conditions can definitely cause blockages or disruptions, it’s not just physical damage that can mess with the body’s electrical signals.

Stress and Emotional Blockages

Let’s talk about something most of us deal with on a daily basis—stress. When you're stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol, which is great in small amounts (like when you need to react quickly in a dangerous situation). But when stress lasts too long, your brain gets flooded with cortisol, and this can interfere with the normal flow of electrical signals.

This might show up as:

  • Mental fog, making it hard to think clearly.
  • Trouble focusing or making decisions.
  • Mood swings or feeling anxious for no apparent reason.

It's almost like stress creates interference, making it harder for your brain to send clear signals. This is why stress often makes you feel "stuck" mentally, even when nothing physically is wrong.

Emotional Trauma: How It Blocks Energy in the Body

Emotional trauma doesn’t just affect your mental state—it can create real, physical blockages in how your body’s energy and electrical signals flow. When you go through a traumatic experience, whether it’s a breakup, the loss of a loved one, or any deeply distressing event, your brain and body react in ways designed to protect you. But sometimes, these protective reactions can cause energy to get "stuck."

Here’s how that happens on a scientific level:

  1. Overactive Stress Responses: Trauma causes your brain to become hyper-alert to anything that might resemble the original traumatic event. This is part of the limbic system (the emotional center of the brain), particularly the amygdala, which processes fear and emotional responses. When you're triggered by something that reminds you of the trauma, the amygdala sends distress signals to the brain, which in turn floods the body with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

This constant flood of stress chemicals keeps the body in a "fight or flight" state, which interferes with normal brain function. The prefrontal cortex (responsible for decision-making, focus, and rational thinking) gets less energy and blood flow, making it harder for you to think clearly or feel in control. It’s as though the electrical signals between your brain’s emotional and logical centers are blocked or misfiring, leaving you stuck in survival mode.

  2. Energy Blockages in the Nervous System: Trauma can also affect the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which controls involuntary processes like heartbeat, digestion, and breathing. When you're constantly triggered by trauma, your ANS may get stuck in a state of hyperarousal (where you're constantly on edge) or hypoarousal (where you feel numb or disconnected).

This disrupted nervous system function can block the natural flow of electrical signals through your body. Instead of smoothly regulating things like your heart rate and breathing, your body can get caught in loops of stress, fear, or emotional shutdown, causing physical symptoms like headaches, tension, or chronic pain.

  3. Neuroplasticity and Trauma: Trauma actually changes the brain’s wiring. The brain is neuroplastic, meaning it can rewire itself in response to experiences. After a traumatic event, your brain may create stronger connections related to fear and survival, while weakening connections in areas responsible for calm and positive emotions.

This is why people with unresolved trauma often feel stuck in negative thought patterns or emotions. Their brain's electrical signals become trapped in loops that reinforce fear, stress, or sadness. In this case, the “block” is in the form of neural pathways that keep sending negative or stressful electrical signals, making it difficult to move forward emotionally.

  4. Physical Manifestations of Blocked Energy: The energy blockages caused by trauma don’t just stay in your brain—they often show up in your body. When your brain constantly sends stress signals, your body may react with physical symptoms like muscle tension, headaches, or digestive issues. This is known as somatization, where emotional distress is expressed through physical symptoms.

Trauma survivors often report feeling tightness in their chest, back pain, or even chronic fatigue. These physical manifestations occur because the nervous system is continuously misfiring or overreacting to perceived threats, leading to blocked or disrupted energy flow through the body’s systems.

How Energy Healing Works: Releasing Blocked Energy

Understanding that trauma affects both your brain and body on an energetic level can help explain why it’s so hard to move past emotional pain. The good news is that the brain's neuroplasticity also means that with the right techniques, you can rewire those connections and clear the energy blockages:

This is where energy healing comes in.

Energy Healing: Restoring Balance and Flow

Energy healing practices aim to unblock and restore the natural flow of energy in the body. They recognize that energy, whether it’s in the form of electrical signals in the nervous system or the body’s subtle energy fields, needs to flow smoothly for us to feel physically, mentally, and emotionally balanced.

Here’s how energy healing can help address the blockages we’ve talked about:

  1. Unblocking Stuck Energy from Trauma and Stress: Energy healing practices, like Reiki, acupuncturechakra balancing, The Emotion Code focus on releasing stuck energy caused by emotional trauma and stress. For instance, Reiki practitioners work with the body’s energy centers (chakras) to clear disruptions and allow energy to flow freely again. This helps reduce the feelings of being mentally or emotionally "stuck" by restoring balance to the nervous system.

  2. Releasing Tension Stored in the Body: Energy healing can also release physical blockages. When trauma or chronic stress causes muscle tension or pain, energy healing can help release that stored energy. Techniques like somatic experiencing or acupressure work directly on these physical energy blockages, allowing the body to relax and heal.

  3. Restoring the Body’s Natural Healing Abilities: Energy healing taps into the body’s own ability to heal. By restoring the natural flow of energy, it helps your body function at its best, improving not only physical health but also mental clarity and emotional well-being. Energy healing helps calm the autonomic nervous system, reduces cortisol, and brings the body back into a rest-and-digest state, allowing it to repair itself.

  4. Supporting Neuroplasticity: Energy healing can also support the brain’s ability to rewire itself. By clearing energetic blockages and calming the nervous system, energy healing allows the brain to form new, healthier neural pathways, helping you break free from the patterns created by trauma or stress.

Energy Healing as a Path to Restoring Balance

Our bodies are made up of energy, whether it's the electrical signals sent by neurons or the more subtle energy that flows through our body's systems. When this energy is blocked—whether by stress, emotional trauma, or physical issues—it can lead to a wide range of problems, from mental fog and emotional distress to physical pain and tension.

Energy healing offers a holistic approach to restoring balance. By helping clear these blockages and allowing energy to flow freely again, it supports both your physical and emotional health. Whether you’re struggling with stress, trauma, or physical pain, energy healing is a powerful tool to get your body’s energy back in alignment, bringing you back to a state of balance, peace, and well-being.
